The 5-Minute Outfit Formula: What to Wear When You Have “Nothing to Wear”

We’ve all done it.

You’re standing in front of a closet full of clothes, staring at everything you own, and somehow come to the conclusion:

“I have absolutely nothing to wear.”

Usually, the problem isn't that you need more clothes.

You need an easier way to put them together.

That's where an outfit formula comes in. Instead of reinventing your style every morning, you create a handful of combinations you know look good. Then you simply change the individual pieces.

Here are some of our favorites.

Bayeas Jeans & Denim High Rise Wide Leg Denim Jeans Light Blue

Formula #1: Great Jeans + Interesting Top + Simple Shoe

Start here because it almost never fails.

Choose jeans you know fit beautifully. Add a top with enough personality to make the outfit interesting, and finish with a comfortable shoe.

The “interesting” part can be anything:

A gorgeous print.

An unusual neckline.

Embroidery.

A pop of color.

A little sparkle.

Texture.

The jeans ground the outfit, which means the top gets to have some fun.

This formula works especially well when you're heading to lunch, shopping, traveling, meeting friends, or doing several things in one day.

Formula #2: Printed Dress + Light Jacket + Sandal

This might be the easiest polished outfit in existence.

One dress. One layer. One pair of shoes.

Done.

A printed dress already gives you color and visual interest, so you don't need to add much. A denim or lightweight jacket makes the outfit feel finished and comes in handy when you encounter aggressive Florida air conditioning.

Keep the shoes uncomplicated.

The result looks like you put thought into your outfit—even if getting dressed took three minutes.

We won't tell.

Formula #3: White Bottom + Colorful Top + One Great Accessory

If your closet contains white pants, shorts, a skort, or white denim, you already own the beginning of dozens of outfits.

White is the perfect backdrop for color.

Try turquoise one day, pink the next, then blue, coral, green, or a fabulous print.

Your accessory can be a necklace, earrings, handbag, scarf, or even a shoe with a little personality.

It's simple without being boring.

Formula #4: Skort + Easy Top + Sneakers

Some days call for maximum comfort.

That's when the skort earns its place in your closet.

You get the polished look of a skirt with the freedom and practicality of shorts underneath. Add a lightweight top and sneakers or comfortable sandals and you've got an outfit that can handle a busy day.

It's especially good for travel, sightseeing, shopping, golf, casual lunches, and those days when you leave the house at 9 a.m. and somehow don't get home until dinner.

Formula #5: Statement Bottom + Simple Top

We often think the top has to be the star.

Not always.

If you have fabulous embroidered jeans, lace denim, colorful pants, or another statement bottom, reverse the usual formula.

Let the bottom be the interesting piece and keep your top relatively simple.

A white, navy, black, or coordinating solid top allows the details of the pants to stand out.

This also gives your favorite basic tops an entirely new purpose.

Formula #6: Maxi Dress + Earrings + You're Done

There are mornings when even three pieces feel like too many.

Enter the maxi dress.

A beautiful maxi creates an entire look on its own. Add earrings, slip into sandals, grab your handbag, and leave.

There's a reason women return to maxi dresses year after year. They're comfortable, flattering, feminine, and remarkably easy.

The right one can take you from lunch to shopping to cocktails without ever feeling underdressed.

How to Find Your Personal Outfit Formula

Pay attention to the outfits that make you feel especially good.

What are you wearing when a friend says, “I love your outfit”?

What do you reach for when you know you'll be photographed?

What do you pack first for a trip?

Those are clues.

Maybe your formula is white jeans + printed top + colorful earrings.

Maybe it's a dress + denim jacket + sandals.

Maybe you're happiest in statement denim and a simple blouse.

Your formula doesn't have to look like anyone else's.

Take Pictures of Outfits You Love

Here's one of the simplest closet tricks we know.

When you put together an outfit you really love, take a quick photo.

Create an album on your phone called “Outfits.”

The next time you're standing in front of your closet convinced that everything you own has suddenly stopped working, open the album.

You'll have your own personal lookbook waiting.

Stop Saving the Good Clothes

There's another reason closets can feel uninspiring.

Sometimes we own clothes we love—but keep saving them.

The pretty top is “too nice” for an ordinary lunch.

The fabulous jeans are waiting for an occasion.

The dress is being saved for vacation.

Wear them.

Tuesday lunch is an occasion. So is dinner with your husband. So is meeting your best friend for coffee.

Your favorite clothes should spend more time on you than they do on a hanger.

Getting Dressed Should Be the Fun Part

A good wardrobe doesn't necessarily give you more options.

It gives you better ones.

Find a few combinations that consistently make you feel comfortable and put together, then repeat them shamelessly.

Change the print. Change the color. Change the accessories.

Keep the formula.

Because the best outfit isn't the one that took an hour to create.

It's the one you put on, look in the mirror, smile, and immediately know:

Yes. This is the one.
