What to Wear on a Cruise: A Simple Packing Guide for Women

The hardest part of packing for a cruise isn't fitting everything into your suitcase.

It's figuring out how one suitcase is supposed to contain clothes for breakfast, the pool, sightseeing, dinner, chilly air conditioning, a shore excursion and possibly a dressier evening.

No wonder people overpack.

The solution is not to prepare a separate outfit for every event. It's to bring a small group of clothes that can change jobs throughout the trip.

Here's how.

First: Think in Categories, Not Days

Packing seven complete outfits for a seven-day cruise sounds logical.

It usually isn't.

Instead, think about what you'll actually be doing:

Sea days: relaxed, comfortable clothes
Shore days: walkable, weather-appropriate outfits
Dinner: polished but comfortable pieces
Dressier evenings: one or two elevated options
Ship interiors: something for aggressive air conditioning

Now you can choose pieces that work in more than one category.

That's where your suitcase starts getting lighter.

The Cruise Dress May Be the Hardest-Working Item You Pack

A great dress can handle breakfast, shopping in port, afternoon cocktails and dinner.

The difference is styling.

Wear it with comfortable sandals and a crossbody bag during the day. Later, change your earrings, add a dressier sandal and suddenly the same dress feels ready for dinner.

Printed dresses are particularly useful because they already look styled even when you've done very little.

That's exactly the kind of vacation math we like.

Pack Bottoms That Play Nicely With Everything

A cruise is not the place for the pants that only match one blouse.

Bring bottoms you can repeat.

White pants, neutral pull-on pants, a skort or a comfortable capri can each work with several tops.

Nobody is keeping track of whether you wore the same white pants on Tuesday and Thursday.

And if they are, they need a better vacation hobby.

Bring More Tops Than Bottoms

This is one of the easiest ways to create variety without adding bulk.

Three bottoms and five tops can produce far more combinations than seven unrelated outfits.

Use a mixture of solids and prints. If your bottoms stay relatively neutral, your tops can bring the personality.

This is also an excellent excuse to pack color.

You're on a cruise. Beige is not mandatory.

A Skort Is Surprisingly Useful

Don't underestimate the humble skort.

For shore excursions, sightseeing and casual sea days, it gives you the ease of shorts with a slightly more polished appearance.

Pair it with a simple top for walking around port, or add a more elevated blouse for lunch.

If you're heading somewhere sunny, a UPF style can be especially useful as part of your overall sun-protection routine.

Bring a Layer. Seriously.

You may be cruising somewhere tropical and still find yourself freezing.

Ships can be chilly inside. Restaurants can be cooler than expected. Decks get breezy after sunset.

Bring one lightweight layer that coordinates with most of your suitcase.

A jacket, cardigan, wrap or lightweight topper is enough.

You'll probably wear it more than the extra three “just in case” outfits you were considering.

What Should You Wear to Cruise Dinner?

Cruise-line dress codes vary, so always check the rules for your particular sailing before packing.

For many ordinary evenings, however, women choose something along the lines of a casual dress, maxi dress, attractive top with pants or another polished resort-style outfit.

The goal is usually less “formal gala” and more “I changed out of what I wore to the pool.”

For a dressier night, one favorite dress plus jewelry and a nicer pair of shoes may be all you need.

Unless dressing formally is part of the fun for you—in which case, enjoy it.

Don't Let Shoes Take Over the Suitcase

Shoes are where good packing intentions go to die.

Try to cover your trip with three categories:

  • Comfortable walking shoe
  • Casual sandal
  • Dressier sandal or wedge

Ideally, each pair should work with several outfits.

And please don't make a cruise the maiden voyage for a brand-new pair of shoes. Your feet will remember the betrayal long after the vacation ends.

A Simple 7-Day Cruise Packing Formula

For a typical warm-weather cruise, a starting wardrobe might look something like this:

  • 3 versatile dresses
  • 4–5 tops
  • 2–3 bottoms
  • 1 skort or pair of shorts
  • 1 lightweight layer
  • 1 dressier evening outfit if needed
  • 3 pairs of shoes
  • A few accessories

Add swimwear, sleepwear and activity-specific pieces, of course.

But the everyday wardrobe itself really can stay that simple.

Leave Room in the Suitcase

This may be the most important packing advice of all.

Don't fill your suitcase to maximum capacity before you leave.

You might shop.

Actually, let's be realistic.

You're probably going to shop.

Cruise Style Should Feel Like Vacation

The best cruise wardrobe isn't the one with the most outfits.

It's the one that gives you enough options that you don't have to think about your clothes very much once you're onboard.

Choose pieces you already feel good wearing. Make sure they work together. Bring color. Bring a layer. Leave behind the uncomfortable shoes.

Then go enjoy the view.

FAQs

How many outfits should I pack for a 7-day cruise?
You don't necessarily need seven completely different outfits. A smaller mix-and-match wardrobe can create plenty of combinations for a week.

Can I wear the same dress twice on a cruise?
Of course. Change the shoes, jewelry or layer and the same dress can feel completely different.

What should women wear to dinner on a cruise?
It depends on the cruise line and evening. Casual dresses, maxi dresses and polished separates are common choices for many regular dinner nights. Always check your cruise line's current dress code.
